1,4 Dioxane is the cancer-causing byproduct of the process used to decrease the harshness of certain chemicals. This process is used in shampoos, deodorants, body lotion, shower gel, bubble bath and hand soap.
It has been linked to cancer, immunotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity.
Shockingly, this chemical is found in the majority of children's bubble bath products!
You will never see this ingredient on a label as it is never an actual ingredient. Look for ingredient clues such as "myreth," "oleth," "laureth," "ceteareth," any other "eth," "PEG," "polyethylene," "polyethylene glycol," "polyoxyethylene," or "oxynol."
Following extensive testing many well known household brands were found to contain this known carcinogen which I am sure may surprise you!.
The video below shows a variety of well known brands of shampoo, baby bubble bath, dish soap, including some labeled "organic" that tested positive for the presence of dioxane!
Watch out for Dial, Hello Kitty and Herbal Essence brands - as of 2009 they have tested high in dioxane!
(*news update 2010 Proctor & Gamble has recently agreed to eliminate dioxane in Herbal Essence sold in the United States )
Sadly several products marketing themselves as organic or natural tested positive for dioxane. Products testing positive for 1,4-dioxane include Jason Fragrance Free Satin Soap, Alba Botanical Passion Fruit Body Wash, Whole Foods Market 365 Everyday Value Shower Gel, and Citrus Magic 100 Percent Natural Dish Liquid.
Brands that definitely do not contain dioxane are Dr. Bronners, Terressentials, and Aubrey Organics.
Other products that tested negative and do not contain dioxane included Burt’s Bees Body Wash, Sundog’s Magic Orange Lavender Organic Lotion, Dr. Hauschka Body Wash Fresh, and Clorox Green Works Natural All-Purpose Cleaner.
There is currently a great deal of activity in the media towards encouraging laws restricting the presence of dioxane.
Progress is being made!
