Eco Friendly Lotions
- The Good, Bad & Downright Ugly!

Finding eco friendly lotions can be frustrating due to the numerous impostors in the marketplace!.

Eco Friendly Lotions

Marketers are betting that you don't have the time to do the necessary detective work to find eco friendly lotions.

They know you are running down the aisle with one kid tugging on your leg and the other pulling bottles off the shelf as soon as you stop.

So here are some shopping tips and a cheat sheet for you.

Ingredients

First, you should know what ingredients you want to avoid when looking for a non toxic lotion. The most common bad guy can be found at the end of the ingredient list. Look for a list of parabens like propylparaben, methyparaben, etc.

Parabens are preservatives and researchers believe there is a link between this ingredient and breast cancer. While there is a lot of research yet to be done to prove it, I recommend avoiding parabens whenever you can.

Want more skin care ingredients to be on the lookout for?.

Marketing

Second, beware of the hype! The more a lotion relies on claims like "banish cellulite"or "make skin years younger" the more you should suspect the lotion is not an eco friendly lotion.

Lotion's job is to block moisture from escaping through your skin. It cannot "cure" your skin unless it is a prescription cream.

If you want to banish cellulite then you need bto get to the gym & work out!. If you want to look younger then drink water, work out and eat healthy food!.

When it comes to organic, take a look at the ingredient list. The list should clearly identify which ingredients are organically grown.

As for natural, "natural" is a word that can mean so many things. Disregard it as an indicator of whether or not a lotion is eco friendly.

Look beyond the brand. Many companies have marketed themselves as being "eco friendly" and may have some non toxic products. Chances are, however, that their entire line is not eco-friendly. If you judge a product solely by brand, you are allowing yourself to be falsely lulled into a sense of safety.

READ THE LABEL.

Packaging

Third, if a lotion is truly eco friendly it will have minimal packaging. That means no outer box.

Lotion will come in a package that is recyclable. Look for the recycle symbol on the bottom of the bottle.

Eco Friendly Lotions

As promised, here is an eco friendly lotions shopping cheat sheet. I have studied these labels and would use the lotions myself. I've ruled out products that use harmful ingredients (see list) and petroleum or a derivative of it. I have also ruled out eco friendly lotions with ridiculously high prices.

Buying

Beauty with a Cause makes the lotion I use. It is a lightweight lotion that goes on easily. It comes in either scented and unscented. Price ranges from $9.99 to $17.50 based on size.

Belle's Botanicals - offers a great selection of scented lotions between $9 and $12. Note this lotion is not vegan. It contains beeswax.

Home Health Lotion/Oil calls their product a lotion but it really is an oil. It works like a lotion with a light application. I do not recommend it when you are traveling as the bottle can leak but it is great for home use. Retails for $4.50 and can be found many places other than this link.

Poof's Closet offers a wonderful lotion for both mom and baby. You can select unscented or scented. It is made to order without preservatives so it has a short shelf life. Price for 8 oz. is $13.

Purple Prairie has a nice line of lotion. The bottles are smaller so you may want to order more than one at a time. Some lotions contain honey so if you are looking for a vegan lotion read the description to be sure the product does not contain honey. Price is $6.99 for 4 oz.

For those who want to buy in the grocery store, here are a few recommendations. Please keep in mind, these lotions are not high on my list. They are however, on the less toxic side of the readily available products.
