"Have you ever heard of hemp clothes?" - well now you have. Hemp clothes are amazingly tough. The strength of the fiber is three times the strength of cotton yet the garments are remain lightweight!
The fiber is also UV and mold resistant so if you live an active outdoor lifestyle you will really enjoy this material.
For many years hemp clothes was strictly associated with the hippy lifestyle, but now hemp has been re-invented and its back as a symbol of the earth friendly movement.
Now for the environment part.
Hemp is very easy to grow (why it's called a weed I guess!) and needs very little water. Its grows easily without fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. It also restores the soil in which it is grown back into peak soil condition.
In many ways it is a wonder plant!
Hemp plants have long roots which reach deep into the soil. This retains the soil and acts to prevent soil erosion. Hemp can be grown just about anywhere during spring, summer and fall.
BTW - You should note, the hemp grown for clothing does not have the narcotic effect that its infamous relative has!
Hemp fabric is also in many ways a miracle eco-fabric!
On top of being eco friendly to grow it is also UV resistant, three times stronger than cotton, and water resistant. It can be made into so many different types of fabrics from rough rope like material to the soft silky material.
Hemp fabric can be used to make dresses, hats, jeans, blouses, curtains, bed sheets, bags, jackets, shirts and almost every other type of clothing you can think of.
Since it is easy to grow, hemp fabric is a less expensive material than cotton which is good news for all of us!
As you start to shop around, often you will find blends such as cotton-hemp or silk-hemp, these are great, but if you can buy pure hemp material it is best, if not a little more expensive!.
