Mineral Oil - okay to use?

Mineral Oil, also known as Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment or White Petrolatum is used in a variety of cosmetic and skincare products.

It is included in products due to its intense moisturizing capability. It keeps the skin hydrated by producing a waterproof barrier that keeps moisture in the skin and prevents it from evaporating.

Recently mineral oil has come under controversy and many are advising that people not use skin care products containing it.

What is the real truth about mineral oil?

Is it the "bad guy" that some say it is or has it been the victim of unfair criticism?

First let's take a look at what it is and what it is made from.

Mineral oil is made from petroleum. When you hear this your first reaction may be OMG I would not put petroleum on my skin!! The word petroleum brings to mind fuel oil, and gasoline and plastics.

But actually petroleum is just a naturally occurring substance created by the compression of decayed, fossilized organic materials.

Mineral oil is a clear odourless product which has been refined from petroleum. Cosmetic grade mineral oil has been purified even further and to look at it or smell it you would probably not even guess it comes from petroleum.

Mineral oil is usually well tolerated by most people and generally does not cause allergic reactions and is not carcinogenic.

It is an excellent moisturizer and is good for keeping skin smooth and supple.

Why the controversy around Mineral Oil?

Some people think mineral oil clogs pores.

While this is true if you were to put industrial grade oil on your skin - it is not true for cosmetic grade mineral oil - which has been specifically formulated to avoid this.

However, because it does form a protective barrier over the skin it should not be applied after products which have a comedogenic nature as it will trap them on the skin causing further irritation and worsening of acne.

It should also not be included in as an ingredient in a product that contains comedogenic substances, for the same reason.

Who should not use mineral oil?

Mineral oil is not a dangerous, carcenogenic or toxic substance when used on the skin but it should not be used by those who suffer from acne, skin breakouts, or (rarely) who are allergic to it.

When is mineral oil okay to use?

It is an excellent substance to keep skin smooth, hydrated and soft.

It should only be used by those who are not prone to acne or skin break-outs.
