Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulfate or SLS as it is more commonly known is an extremely common ingredient found in many cleaning & most shampoo and soap products.

To give you a better idea of it's broader uses, the following is an extract from our good friends at Wikipedia:

"SLS is a highly effective surfactant and is used in any task requiring the removal of oily stains and residues. As such the compound is found in high concentrations in industrial products including engine degreasers, floor cleaners, and car wash soaps. In household products, SLS is used in lower concentrations with toothpastes, shampoos, and shaving foams. It is an important component in bubble bath formulations for its thickening effect and its ability to create a lather".

The problem with using Sodium lauryl sulfate as an ingredient in any beauty cleansing products is that is damages your skin by drying it out!.

It also penetrates your skin causing irritation and cell damage. Even small doses, as in daily shampooing, can cause damage. By penetrating the skin, there is also concern that it could have damaging effects on your immune system.

For the men in your life, SLS has been found to increase baldness in men. Check the shampoo that he uses.

You know that sting you get in your eye when shampoo gets in it?

That sting is thanks to SLS!

Cheap Shampoo and Soap Ingredient

Used often, it can cause permanent eye damage in children.

With all this going for it, why would a responsible manufacturer continue to use SLS? The answer, because it's cheap!.

This is the reality with many ingredients on our Skin Care Dirty Dozen list. If it is cheap and there is no regulation preventing an ingredients usage, the manufacturers will continue to do so.

My recommendation, check out our eco friendly products section and find products that do not contain SLS or SLES.

You may have to pay a little more for these products -- but they are worth it for the health and comfort of your family!
